Welcome to Vermilion Kennels

Vermilion Kennels is a small, in home show kennel located on 7.74 acres of land just outside of Duluth, MN….at the western tip of Lake Superior when looking at the map.

Our home and dog yards are spacious and well suited to living with two active breeds. The Wheatens, Cardigans, Steve, and I share the woods with bear, timber wolves, deer, fox, rabbits, squirrels and hundreds of birds both large and small. We enjoy a close proximity to nature, wonderful privacy, as well as near by shopping and dining opportunities. We are just two hours from Mpls/St. Paul and are truly in the wooded northland!

The dogs all live in our home. Our indoor facilities include two large bedrooms for dogs (10×16 and 12×14), with additional space for puppies and moms to be separated from dogs going to and from dog shows. Dogs have their own bathroom for grooming needs as well as close access to the family room and my office for socialization.

We have large outdoor areas for the dogs ranging from secure paddocks where they can run, play, and build muscles, to covered kennel runs which afford maximum security for those in season or small dogs. There is a separate play area especially designed for puppies and well covered to protect them from raptors….which we see almost daily! The puppy pen also protects them from snow and rain and allows youngsters to get outside in any weather.
We also have a cat, so all pups have been cat tested! And grandchildren visit frequently!

Breeding dogs is a serious responsibility. The dogs I produce will be with their families for 12-15 years and it is my hope that those will all be good years for the dog and the family. Careful, knowledgeable breeding will help insure this.

Placement of puppies is the most difficult part of the job. The welfare of individual pups and the betterment of the breed are my main considerations. When bred and born in my home, they are my responsibility for their entire life. I will always be available to them and their owners help insure that they are healthy, happy, and responsible members of their household.
Pet pups are sold only on a spay/neuter contract and I will at no time compromise this.

Show potential pups are sold only to established breeder/exhibitors, known by me or others, and able to prove their qualifications and commitment to the breed. Or to newcomers I feel I am able to work well with as they learn all there is to know about the breed in order to make sound decisions concerning their own breeding program.

Breed club membership is expected from both the seasoned exhibitor and those new to the breed, as is adherence to the applicable Codes of Ethics. At no time will I relinquish full rights to breed as one pleases in the first generation and am willing to discuss my criteria with you at any time. I realize this may limit the sale of show potential pups, but I am committed to the breed and to the trust others have placed in me with these dogs.

Call Name: Determined by buyer
Registered Name: Vermilion‘s_________________________
Breeder: Barbara Peterson

“COMPANION DOG” means the dog is sold as a pet rather than for breeding or show. No warranties or guarantees, expressed or implied are made under this contact except as stated below. The parties to this agreement submit to the jurisdiction of the courts of the state of Minnesota and venue in the county of St. Louis for any dispute arising under this agreement, or the breach thereof.

1. The dog is a purebred Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. The pedigree is correct to the best of my knowledge and is attached. The AKC papers will be sent to you upon receipt of proof that the dog has been spayed or neutered. AKC papers will be issued as a “limited” registration. This means that the offspring of this dog can not be registered and in no way impacts your ownership of the dog itself.

2. HEALTH The buyer/owner shall have the option to return the dog to the seller/breeder and obtain a full refund of the purchase price paid upon either of the following conditions:

a) If the dog is returned to the seller/breeder within two business days following the delivery of the dog to the buyer/owner and certification by a licensed veterinarian is concurrently provided to the seller/breeder stating that the dog is not healthy or as represented herein.

b) If, prior to the dog reaching 12 months of age, a licensed veterinarian certifies that the dog has hereditary crippling or fatal defects which would render the animal useless as a companion.

The buyer/owner shall have the right to select the veterinarian and shall be responsible for the corresponding fees and expenses. The veterinarian’s certification shall specify the defects found.

You must get prior written authorization from the seller to euthanize this animal under the provisions of the contract. If the animal is not euthanized it must be returned to the seller to receive any consideration for or refund. Cost of return transportation to be born by the buyer.

The buyer/owner will notify the seller/breeder of any and all major health problems that occur throughout the dogs life time. I don’t need to know if your dog gets ear mites at the kennel but I do want to know of conditions which might impact the entire breed. If in doubt let me know. This is how I adjust my breeding program to produce the healthiest dogs possible.

The buyer/owner must maintain annual vet checks for the dog and keep all suggested immunizations up to date.

The buyer/owner will have the blood and urine screening done on the dog to watch for early signs of PLE/PLN. Your vet will know what to do. I will provide a handout for your vet. Please bring it to the vet on your first visit and if you need more copies contact me. Current health information is also available at www.scwtca.org. It would be nice if you could obtain a copy of all blood work done for any reason and send me a copy of it. This way I can look for trends in the numbers.

If you or your vet suspects PLE/PLN or RD you will contact me as soon as possible. I want to know for future breeding considerations AND to pass on the latest information which may help your dog. We also want to do the necessary postmortem testing and get that information to the researchers.

3. TRANSFER The animal may not be transferred to another owner or euthanized without prior written consent of the seller. The first right of refusal goes to the seller/breeder. The only exception would be in the case of trauma or sudden illness for which it would be reasonably felt to be inhumane to allow the animal to suffer. I am not in favor of extreme measures to save an injured or extremely ill dog. The comfort and quality of life for the animal are the major concerns.

If at any time you find you are unwilling or unable to keep this dog I will take it back.

If you desire to transfer him to a new owner you may not transfer him to:

a) A pet store (retail or wholesale) or other person (s) engaged in the business of selling dogs and/or any other animals.
b) Anyone holding a USDA license for the sale of any animal
c) Any person who intends to resell the dog
d) Any person who intends to breed this dog with any other dog without prior written authorization from the seller/breeder.

4. TRAINING The buyer agrees to complete an eight (8) week obedience school with in one year of the date of sale, preferably as soon as the course is offered in your area. The sooner the better for the dog and the family!

5. NEUTERING The animal will be neutered at about 6 months of age and no later than 9 months of age. Failure to do so will result in the dog being reclaimed with no reimbursement.

6. HOUSING The buyer agrees to provide adequate housing and shelter for the animal. The buyer is aware that the greatest safety for the dog is achieved when the dog is confined to a fenced yard or kennel run while out of doors and that collars may and do strangle a dog left on a rope or chain. The dog must be restrained while out of doors at all times and with due care.

The buyer agrees to provide a crate (wire or plastic) for the dog. It is advised that while the dog is left alone he be confined to his crate for his safety.

7. This puppy is a baby and must be protected from harm or injury. Children are a danger to puppies and must be monitored at all times. They should not be allowed to tease the dog or physically mistreat the dog. It must be stressed that chasing the dog is not in the dog’s best interest. The dog must be treated gently and kept safe from harm at all times. The buyer agrees to assume this responsibility.

8.The seller/breeder agrees to assist the buyer/owner in any way possible with all questions relating to this dog.
